The combined MD-PhD BME program (National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)) is offered in conjunction with the Indiana University School of Medicine to train physician-engineers. The MD-PhD BME combined degree is for students committed to a career that intimately incorporates engineering design and translational research with clinical care. The curriculum is flexible, enabling students to design a program that meets their individual goals. A diverse body of engineering and clinical faculty with broad expertise in four signature research areas provide individualized training and mentoring to students. Graduates of this program have pursued careers in academic medicine, business start-ups, and industry. A typical academic plan permits most students to complete the combined degree program in seven or eight years.
Enrolling in a master's degree program is a significant investment. And as the earnings studies from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show, it can be a very worthwhile one. But those higher earnings start to come in, tuition (and other) bills need to be paid in the short term. Fortunately, there are a number of financial resources that can help make a master's degree program more affordable. Scholarships, grants, and educational loans are all designed to aid eligible master's degree students in paying for tuition, books, and living expenses.
A French diplôme d'ingénieur (postgraduate degree in engineering) is also the equivalent of a master's degree, provided the diploma is recognised by the Commission des titres d'ingénieur, as are qualifications recognised at Level I of the répertoire national des certifications professionnelles (national register of professional certificates).[81][82]

Doctorates. These are often further divided into academic and professional doctorates. An academic doctorate can be awarded as a Doctor of Philosophy degree (from Latin Doctor philosophiæ; Ph.D. or D.Phil.) or as a Doctor of Science degree (from Latin Doctor scientiæ; D.Sc.). The Doctor of Science degree can also be awarded in specific fields, such as a Doctor of Science in Mathematics degree (from Latin Doctor scientiarum mathematic arum; D.Sc.Math.), a Doctor of Agricultural Science degree (from Latin Doctor scientiarum agrariarum; D.Sc.Agr.), a Doctor of Business Administration degree (D.B.A.), etc. In some parts of Europe, doctorates are divided into the Doctor of Philosophy degree or "junior doctorate," and the "higher doctorates" such as the Doctor of Science degree, which is generally awarded to highly distinguished professors. A doctorate is the terminal degree in most fields. In the United States, there is little distinction between a Doctor of Philosophy degree and a Doctor of Science degree. In the UK, Doctor of Philosophy degrees are often equivalent to 540 CATS credits or 270 ECTS European credits, but this is not always the case as the credit structure of doctoral degrees is not officially defined.
